Neighbors is the most influential series on Hungarian television; in its heyday, more than 6 million people watched the soap opera set every other Thursday on Gazdagrét. What made the story of the Vágási, Mágenheim and Takács families special was that it also dealt with the difficulties of making a living that became part of everyday life for the masses of Hungarians after the change of regime. In the Christmas special edition of Partizán, we talk to the former cast and creators of Neighbors about the significance of the series, its political role, and why the series had to be canceled during the first Orbán government.
