Csabusa published his Minecraft adventure map called Sponge on February 7, 2014, which was icteled by the video game The Stanley's Parable. The game later received 5 other sequels. The series ended with Sponge 6 in 2016. A planned seventh part was also to be made, but was eventually canceled for unknown reasons. Levente Sárközi became acquainted with Csabusa's work at a very young age, and he always wanted to make adventure maps like Csabusa. Levente described that the idea for the Sponge film came to him in April 2023, when he somehow found himself facing Csabusa's work again. Super Mario Bros.: The Movie mostly sparked the idea for a video game adaptation. After the completion of Will You Take the Show?, Levente showed further interest in further video game adaptations. In March 2024, he remembered the concept of the Sponge film again, and he approached Csabusa with it. Finally, the videographer gave permission for the film, so Levente started working on it.
